It wasn’t that long ago that Chicago rock/pop band Fall Out Boy was last in Australia, March in fact. Since they last visited our shores, the boy’s popularity has skyrocketed to great heights with their hit Thnks Fr Th Mmrs racing up the charts; their latest release, The Take Over, The Breaks Over looks like it’s going to do the same.
All set for another big Aussie tour, Fall Out Boy visited the Riverstage in Brisbane, welcomed by a massive sold-out crowd of over 10,000. As to be expected, the audience was mostly made up of groups of 17 year old’ish, excited young girls, with the odd parent or minder tagging along - the more mature fans of Fall Out Boy could be spotted in the crowd scattered here and there.
Support act Gyroscope, the post-grunge band from Perth, got the crowd in a rocking mood, with their infectious sound. They belted out some older material including Beware Wolf, Fast Girl and Doctor, Doctor, with the added mix of newer stuff featuring their new single, Snake Skin, which seemed to appeal to the younger crowd.
High-pitched screaming was intense as the Fall Out Boys lit up the stage with the booming AC/DC Thunderstruck – their arrival prompted the mass of energized girls to reach for their mobile phones to capture that special shot. Bassist Pete Wentz, the pin-up boy of the band, seemed like the perfect rock star for our age, as self-conscious as he is shameless and in his between-song comments, he poked fun at his celebrity without pretending not to cherish it. His playing style is quite unorthodox: instead of plucking out bass lines, he strummed the strings way up by the fret board, which caused the unassuming lead singer, Patrick Stump to work twice as hard.
Along with a range of cover songs that included Akon’s Don’t Matter, R. Kelly’s Ignition, Michael Jackson’s Beat It, Green Day’s Basket Case and The Power Of Love, Fall Out Boy kept the screaming fans’ mood alive with their own popular hits, This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs and Dance, Dance. Both screaming fans and the band looked impressed with the night’s work, even to the point when Mr. Wentz performed his usual bass-throwing to finish off the show.
